Founded in 1831, NYU is the largest private university in the US. The first classes began in rented quarters located downtown near City Hall in 1832.
In 1914, NYU established an undergraduate program downtown called Washington Square to serve commuter students. The student body grew to over 7,000 by 1929, leading to the formation of several graduate schools.
By 1939, NYU had the largest private enrollment in the US with 47,000 students, fulfilling the vision of its founders. Under President John Sexton, who began his tenure in 2002, NYU expanded its global reach and became a premier research university in the 21st century.
One notable academic milestone was the re-establishment of Engineering. After affiliating with Brooklyn's Polytechnic University in 2008, NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering was created in 2014 and renamed NYU Tandon School of Engineering in 2015.
